changed my blog header, title, and subtitle for the first time in over 3 years. arthur waley and bai juyi and huangshan just haven't been me for a while.

didn't manage to draw much these past two months, though I was able to doodle something at least once a week

Watched the Ace Attorney movie with my roomies! To be honest, it was not an amazing movie or even an amazing adaptation by any stretch of the word, but if you're an Ace Attorney fan, then it's a definite must-see. The best way to describe it is as an extremely high-budget cosplay production, which, if you ask me, is the right way to make a live-action movie adaptation of a video game.

brief spoiler-free review under here )

In an ideal world, someone would have the budget and dedication to turn the Phoenix Wright trilogy into a tv series with at least 3 seasons so that all of the cases can be explored in full. But for what it is — a 135 minute film — the Ace Attorney movie made me a happy fan. I have just one pet peeve though. Why didn't they bother to do Phoenix's zigzag eyebrows? Everything was so on-point, so why were they missing Phoenix's trademark? That's like having a perfect Gintama cosplay production but forgetting Elizabeth's eyelashes. :c

Back on campus and back at work. Jetlag has made me pull 2 all-nighters straight. [tumblr.com profile] sanxian tells me sunlight helps fight jetlag. Well, yesterday I spent like half an hour outside in 102°F/39°C and mostly direct sunlight on my walk back from work. That just ended up making me woozy, and I took a "nap" from which I did not awaken until midnight. orz

Sort of had a vacation the week prior during which the small brother person finished watching the third season of Community (and I rewatched most of it with him), and I saw Hot Fuzz and Shaun of the Dead for the first time (and he rewatched them with me). The rest of the time, I played Sacred Stones while he heckled all my strategies (he'd beaten it once back in '09).

I'm really tempted to crosspost the photos my roommates sent me from when they were bearsitting for me while I was away, as well as pics of the new bear — a rilakkuma plush — I bought because his ears reminded me of egg custard tarts. But I realize bear photos for me are the equivalent of cat photos for those among you who are cat owners in that we personally derive a great deal more pleasure from them than those who have to scroll past while reading their daily journal backlog. |D

So ahh without further ado, that bimonthly doodle dump I've been procrastinating on:

And finally, it's been about a year now for me personally, but I think [personal profile] pseudo_tsuga and I have been definitively dragged (kicking and screaming) back into kpop thanks in no small part to the usual suspect, [personal profile] ghostdrive. The other parts are credit due to exo-m (so far), and Tao being a criminally cute cutie. Although kpop had been sneaking its way back onto my mp3 player in droves this summer because I like the way Bang Yong Guk raps, B1A4 is fun, and the new f(x) mini-album is their best yet (more Amber is always welcome ♥)... but exo is definitely where it's at right now, I can't lie. /)u(\

[personal profile] pseudo_tsuga and I grudgingly look forward to whatever insidious plans [personal profile] ghostdrive has in store for us, sIGH. ♥

I'm in Toronto right now with a couple of my roommates, [tumblr.com profile] sonicorca and [tumblr.com profile] eggtrolls. We'll be hitting TCAF in the morning; I'm excited to meet [tumblr.com profile] lalage and buy her book. ♥

Time for that bimonthly/selected art dump. About 50/50 Gintama and Legend of Korra with a sprinkling of crossover. Chronological order (where we left off in March → newest):

I'm staaarving from the long train ride. Going to eat all the food in Toronto in the morning. Count on it.

× A piece showed up on tumblr radar today that I'd suggested for Daily Deviation back in 2009. I clicked through and read my written description; I sounded like a salesperson. I used to be really involved with deviantart back in high school. I would read into all the gallery mods and try to figure out how they clicked; what started as a way to get my biases recognized soon turned into a game of manipulating people with words. At first I would try to get each of my friends featured at least once as a way to show my appreciation (a moderately successful endeavor, in fact). It wasn't long before I started suggesting pieces I personally did not even like expressly because I knew what the mods liked and could pitch it to them in a way that would sell. And, unsurprisingly, it wasn't long after that that suggesting DDs lost its appeal for me.

× This is the first year in longer than I care to remember that I've remembered the Sand Dance anniversary but let it slip past. I have forgotten it in the past, but I've always done something to commemorate it when I do remember (which is most years). This is the first year wherein I was so stressed out by other things that I purposely let it fall by the wayside. I'd originally intended to finish up a certain project I'd thought up in November 2011 and started in January. It feels like missing my children's birthday. The year's not off to a good start.

× Went out for hotpot with the roommates last night. It was really good. I haven't had hotpot in a long time. Last time the roomies went out for hotpot, I was too busy with either work or student org obligations (I don't remember). We really don't hang out anymore; lately it's been more just them telling me what all happened after they come back. We used to have inside jokes; now it's more like they have inside jokes and have to make an extra effort to explain things to me. Kinda convenient that I already find cheese fondue funny in a Gintama context, since that's one of the big ones....

× The Gintama anime could not have picked a better time to wrap up its current season. I'm a horrible multitasker (more like, I can't multitask at all). One fandom at at time is how I roll. The last series that had my heart so completely (lived for it from week to week, screamed and cried when it was over, wrote love letters to it) was of course A:TLA back in high school. I didn't get into it until the summer of 2008, meaning I marathoned seasons 1 & 2 during the tail end of the infamous one year hiatus before season 3 aired. I lucked out in a similar way with my Gintama experience. Anyway, you'd think that after waiting 4 years for The Legend of Korra, I'd be more adapted to waiting but nope, haha. The opposite. I don't know how I'm going to survive until April 21 for new episodes, and each week after that....

This burn-out phase has been going on for far too long. I lost my voice on December 17th, if my twitter feed serves me correctly, was beleaguered by coughing within the week, and still have the tail end of that same cough right now. When I talk, I sound like a toad. My energy is at an all-time low.

I slept through new year's because I was feeling under the weather.

But enough of me being miserable. I promised friends that I would be tackling Homestuck and One Piece simultaneously over holiday break. As it stands, I am 1000+ pages into Homestuck and 100+ chapters into One Piece.

One Piece owns my soul. I am resisting the urge to just spam &hearts and weepy emotes in an effort to muster up some coherent thought. But what can I say?? I literally love everybody. Luffy especially. I want to stretch his face sobbbb ok no this whole being coherent thing isn't working ;; Let me... let me just peel an orange and try to calm down.

Waugh. Anyway.

Unexpectedly got myself into Berserk over break as well. I want to have enough canon under my belt so I'll be able to properly appreciate the movies coming out this year. I'm falling a little behind though; my Berserk watching buddies currently have me outstripped by a good 4 episodes or so.

The last episode of Arakawa Under the Bridge is still sitting unwatched on my computer. I don't know what I'm planning at this point, maybe awaiting news of a 3rd season before watching what is currently "the end"? I really, really adore the cast of the anime and, as soppy as this may sound, the messages strike a chord with me through the nonsense.

But 2011 really has been the year of Gintama for me. Since I started it last January, I'm sure you're all worn out from hearing me talk about it haha~ Fandoms burn strong for about a year for me, is how it's always been. I can feel my obsession settling down to a healthy devotion alongside series that will always have my unabated love, like Digimon, Escaflowne, Inuyasha, Pet Shop of Horrors, Fullmetal Alchemist, Twelve Kingdoms... I will never be less than delighted to talk, write, draw, sing about any of these, with anyone, at anytime. These are the series that make it for me. There are those that don't quite make it (Bleach, in spite of having a claim on 8 years of my life, and I STILL cannot quit it) as well as those that die ugly (Hetalia). But Gintama is one of the ones that'll be a part of me forever.

And now, what's a(n) end/beginning of the year post without a doodle dump. The good thing about not posting one of these in months is that we end up with a slightly more scrupulous selection, haha, and in actual chronological order this time...

Click if you want the actual resolution (and tl;dr comments on my OCs ._.) Seriously, the full-size image nearly breaks my layout. o_o

I'm still awkwardly straddling this artblock. Watch, it'll be halfway through March when inspiration finally strikes and I'll want to draw a lunar new year picture. -_- ...But hopefully I'll be back in the game and drawing in time for the Lantern Festival?

...Gotta survive those midterms first. Ulp.

I made a point to doodle at work, even if I couldn't make myself finish it ._.

I suppose I'll be crossposting this over to [community profile] sand_dance at some point, maybe as a part of a sketch dump...

So, the new Maaya album came out on the 12th. [livejournal.com profile] dillpops has a couple of translations up at [syndicated profile] maayasakamoto_feed: "Tegami" and "Moonlight (or music for you to sleep to)". Check them out! I haven't listened to the whole album yet, but "Utsukushii Hito" is track 4! ♥

ETA. Ok, now I have listened to the whole album. "eternal return" should totally be an OP or ED for the return of Gintama this April! (If that does happen, I called it! xDD) And what with You Can't Catch Me peaking at #1 on Oricon, how long do you suppose it'll be before someone besides me points out that "Kimi no Sei" and Ikimonogakari's "Planetarium" is the same song? /edit

PS. Tonight... TONIGHT I PLAY FIRE EMBLEM!!!!!!!! a-after this episode of Gintama (I'm on ep 109) x'D

I've lost skill and familiarity drawing with pen and paper (no surprise there), but I haven't lost the "sense" so to speak. My eye is still as critical as ever; it's frustrating that I've grown so sloppy. Even as I struggle, the result still survives the horizontal-flip test. I still know what about the general anatomy is off, even if I can't quite fix it, being so out of practice.

So is one saddled with an "artist's eye" for eternity, forever judging and wishing to capture even after one has long since lost the skill? What a sad, sad existence...

And my heart but a helpless popcorn kernel ♥

(Attempting to describe the effect that Phoenix Wright & Miles Edgeworth seem to have on me in a midnight gmail chat with [livejournal.com profile] artemis_elric.)

Oh, and this gem of an analogy sallied forth from the lips of the small brother person today: "A snail is to a slug as a euphonium is to a bari sax." (Did I miss out for not doing band in school? I think I did.)

Anyway.

I'm happy to report that this little guy

has found a home with [personal profile] tn. She has named him Ricky, and she loves him dearly. (If you'll recall, [personal profile] tn made me this darling Earth Day card last year. She is quite often associated with acorns with happy faces.)

For anyone who is still interested in following the ugly drama that is the Bleach plagiarism... Nick Simmons released an official statement on the matter and, surprise surprise, he denies the tracing.

If you watch either my deviantART gallery or [community profile] sand_dance, then I owe you an apology in that you've already seen these sketches incorporated into larger, completed works. Spent all morning writing down this dream.
The Poet Who Loved a Mountain
A Tale of Sand Dance

She was a girl who had just become a woman and so unsure of herself that she ran into a cupboard to hide when she heard someone entering the room. The someone was a young scholar who had come in seeking ginger root to make a warm drink because it was the cold season and he had a bad cough. When he opened the cupboard and a lady tumbled out, stammering and flustered, he hastily retraced his steps to the doorway.

“I-I was cleaning,” she said, and her voice was still a girl’s voice.

“That’s alright. I will wait out here until you’re finished.” And he realized that his heart pounded, and he would have liked to go back into the room with her if only it would not cause her distress.

She was the old doctor’s student. She had come from a long way off where there were mountains that rose above the clouds and trees grew out of the stone. He thought she was so beautiful that it frightened him, and he never felt so happy as when she turned from the shelves and pressed into his hands the ginger root. But then he could not think of a reason to stay and had to excuse himself to go boil some water in the kitchens.

As the pot whistled away on the stove and he scraped the chopped ginger into a porcelain dish, he thought of more than a dozen things that he could have said to her if only he hadn’t left in such a hurry. His hands smelled sharp and sweet of ginger as he stifled a cough and poured the boiling water into the bowl. He was a poet and an orator. He had never been at a loss for words.

"Autumn's Dream" is the childhood theme of Sir Ailan from Sand Dance. I have had his main theme written out on staff paper for, what, six years now? But I've never recorded it yet. It's very depressing. T_T Anyways, this was recorded using digital gopichand and choir voices.

I had a wonderful dream. I plugged my piano into my laptop, started up OpenCanvas, and when I played, it CGed a picture. Yes, I know...wishful thinking. OTZ

Today was my first attempt with FL Studio — a remix of "Path" — this was before I figured out how to adjust dynamics (volume) and and tempo (speed)

Epic fail, Take 1 )

Then I hunted around for some free soundfonts and found a bunch of neat Arabic instruments. Sand Dance's theme is meant to be played by an erhu, a long-necked, two-stringed, traditional Chinese bowed instrument, but I had to make do with what I had on hand.

I'm not disabling downloads for these two because they're half-assed excuses for music, pardon my Klatchian. So if you really wanted to that badly, you could find the mp3s under my "Original Compositions" folder on my 4shared account.

I finally got around to learning how to make favicons for my websites. xD; (Favicons are, by the way, those little images that appear next to the website name up on the tab — like that red swirly for Dreamwidth or the little Fella head for deviantART). Turns out all I needed was a Photoshop plugin to write .ico files. OTZ

I am irrationally excited to see the Chinese characters for Sand Dance and a magatama , respectively, replace the blank white spots next to the titles of earthen vessel and The Color of the Sky.
