Watched the Ace Attorney movie with my roomies! To be honest, it was not an amazing movie or even an amazing adaptation by any stretch of the word, but if you're an Ace Attorney fan, then it's a definite must-see. The best way to describe it is as an extremely high-budget cosplay production, which, if you ask me, is the right way to make a live-action movie adaptation of a video game.

brief spoiler-free review under here )

In an ideal world, someone would have the budget and dedication to turn the Phoenix Wright trilogy into a tv series with at least 3 seasons so that all of the cases can be explored in full. But for what it is — a 135 minute film — the Ace Attorney movie made me a happy fan. I have just one pet peeve though. Why didn't they bother to do Phoenix's zigzag eyebrows? Everything was so on-point, so why were they missing Phoenix's trademark? That's like having a perfect Gintama cosplay production but forgetting Elizabeth's eyelashes. :c

I've just finished watching the first episode of Sket Dance in preparation for the Gintama x Sket Dance crossover episode next week.

My impression based on episode 1 )

Anyway, I was wondering, for those on my flist who follow Sket Dance in anime or manga form, is the first episode sufficient to introduce me to the Sket Dance cast? Do I need to watch 4 more episodes by next week, or am I all set to go?

In other news, I dropped my glasses and broke them irreparably last Thursday morning, which led to discovering that having a twitlist comprised of 80% Gintama fans makes the world a much better place to be. So in spite of having held legless lenses up to my face in class, many failed attempts to glue the pieces together with [tumblr.com profile] sonicorca's hot glue gun, stumbling half-blind around campus, and getting bemused glances at work because these several layers of bright teal duct tape on my glasses match my camisole (thanks, I try!), I feel like a ninja assassin; I will think of these glasses as Gin-san, and I won't relinquish them for anything short of digivolving battle mecha magical shoujo frames!!

(which should be arriving sometime next week ahaha)

Although some things could have been done better, this was an extremely difficult arc to translate into animation, and I think the production team and the cast really pulled out all the stops bringing these chapters to life.

The Kabuki-cho arc didn't surpass the Yoshiwara arc as a whole, but there were moments that I felt were completely unequaled throughout the series, and in the end, I found myself clapping silently at the screen.

(And daaaamn how was that soundtrack during the fight scenes even real?! /fans self)

This was truly worth the wait. Thank you Sunrise. And thanks to all my Gintama peeps for respecting my wish to stay "spoiler-free", so to speak, during my one month hiatus!

Subject line is a quote from the second volume of Takeru, which arrived yesterday; I just read it this morning. I'm continually floored by the pacing of this series, although I can't give Kazuki Nakashima (Gurren Lagann) too much credit considering it is after all a 4-volume adaptation of a really tightly constructed play. But that doesn't make reading it any less delicious.

More fight sequences in this second installment, and if you know Karakarakemuri (the manga-ka) at all, that's a good thing. Honestly. Takeru is an action manga, and Karakarakemuri is god's gift to action manga. The fight sequences are orgasmic, like, hypothetically I would worry about anything less than a studio like Production I.G. throwing in Moribito amounts of funding, talent, time, and just overall distilled epic to animate Takeru.

I don't think I was very emphatic about this point the first couple of times I blogged this series but take it from me, buy the licensed releases of Takeru. Not only has TokyoPop translated an absolutely stellar script, the art inside is just so delectable (I know it's hard to tell from the minimalistic covers) that you'll want to be holding this baby in your hands. Scanlations just don't do Takeru justice.

Besides, there are only 4 volumes (and one unlicensed gaiden, but the scanlations for that are really decent).
