Somehow, [livejournal.com profile] myrialux and I got onto the subject of the pronunciation of the word "human." We both say "hyoo-man," with a voiced H at the beginning, while we've both heard podcast hosts and other speakers who say "yoo-man," with a voiced Y (or a J if you come from fjord country!) at the beginning. We're both wondering which accents/dialects use which. (There may even be "oo-man" pronunciations out there in some dialects, for all I know.)

So, please answer this question:
How do you pronounce the word "human," and from what U.S. state or other country does your dialect of spoken English originate?
[livejournal.com profile] myrialux and I both pronounce it "hyoo-man" and we both grew up in Texas (him north me central) and have the standard Midwest American accent that really characterizes Texas, instead of the Texan drawl that everyone thinks Texans use. (It's a country vs. city thing, really.)

Tagging this "poll" even though I'm not using a poll form. :D

Want to chill to some birds?

A boring 15-minute video I made to test my GoPro and iMovie. It's just birds on the feeder and the cat watching them--if you need to chill out and watch birds it's great for that.

If you just want the highlights reel, there's a moment of action at 7:30 as Sora jumps onto the windowsill and scares some birds, then he starts sniffing the camera about 8:00. Be sure to stop it before then if you think your heart can't handle the excitement. What I think is our female cardinal, Hera, flies down about 7:00. Around 12:40, you can catch a glimpse of a house finch stuffing sunflower seeds down the gullet of one of its young on the feeder on the right, and at 13:00 they fly up to the fence and the almost-grown chick continues begging.

Wildlife seen: house finches, white-winged doves, cardinal, house cat (inside).

I'm working on how to export it in HD because of course I am. I made some more video this afternoon that features a squirrel climbing down the pole and grabbing seed from the feeder on the right. I bet you can't wait.

"Besides, our eyes are on the front of our faces so we can always face forward into the future!"

See, I haven't read much of Doraemon, but even I recognize that line. Is Monobear just quoting that series constantly, and I'm not noticing it? I wonder if the voice actress developed some pent-up frustration voicing that cat for so many years.

We had storms come through yesterday evening. Yesterday was also trash pickup day, and our street is slightly inclined, so you can guess that there were large rivers of runoff flowing curbside, right through where the trash bins had been put out. Most people had put their bins away by the time the storm began, but a few hadn't. Wind blew open the lids of several, which most likely produced a noxious soup inside them ('round here we put trash in plastic bags before tossing, but there's always ones with holes or something else that causes nasty-smelling leaks).

And one of the bins from up the street decided to go walkabout. We caught sight of the bin majestically sailing all the way down the street--we had no idea where it came from, and it was raining pretty heavily--so didn't bother to chase it. It was a magnificent(-ly hilarious) sight, and the capper came when the bin followed the rules of the road and halted at the stop sign.

Proof! )

Article on how posting longer stories affected one online magazine.

I already follow a few sites that point out good and great longform journalism stories, so I'm happy to see more of it coming to the Web.

Bought a GoPro camera this week, because I WANTED ONE and not because I had any need for one. We are both highly impressed at what this thing can do. It uses a 64G microSD card, and will also shoot at 1080p. So you get 3.5 hours of hi-def video onto a card THE SIZE OF MY THUMBNAIL. Actually, slightly smaller than the size of my thumbnail.

The limiting factor is battery life: I set the camera on the windowsill to film the bird feeders while we went to theg rocery store and breakfast, and the battery died after a bit over an hour of that. XD If I count the time earlier this week I spent messing about with it, it will probably film for about 1.5 hours before crapping out. You can get a separate battery pack that will just about double that length.

I plan on doing minimal editing (mostly to remove the boobtacular shot as I set the camera up at the very first--I'd be tempted to leave it in, but it's also extremely unflattering of my face and head XD), then uploading the results to YouTube so you can have an hour of bird- and cat-watching if you need to just chill.

The finch babies are out and pestering their parents, by the way. I can hear one going FEEDMEFEEDMEFEEDMEFEEDME from my office as I type this right now. With luck I've got at least one doing that on video. :)

1. I got Monday off! Monday is Memorial Day, which is one of the federal holidays my work considers paid holidays for full-time employees. We don't get overtime if we work on a holiday, but if we work that day we can get another day off with pay, or if we don't work that day, we will still get paid for it. Because it's a Monday, I figured I wouldn't be able to get it off, since that's usually order day and I have to be there to print POs. But it looks like all the companies we order from are off, so ordering will be moved to Tuesday and I can have Monday off. I already have Sunday off, but I'm going out with Alexander that day, so this will be nice to have a day off after that to be able to just completely rest without going anywhere or seeing anyone.

2. I wasn't thrilled about working tonight on my day off, but I got to take home a ton of free meat, so that was a nice bonus. (I posted a picture on Twitter of my haul.)

I have come into possession of the supreme American cultural artifact. This priceless item will put my children through medical school - if I can bring myself to part with it. Its beauty is beyond compare.

Unnecessarily fancy model car with 'Viagra' printed on it.

Unnecessarily fancy model car with 'Viagra' printed on it.

This thing is a perfect encapsulation of everything that's wrong with the American formulation of masculinity.

3rd day.

The hipster closet
The bf and I often have this debate. He's in complete denial.

Bf*enthusiastic*: I'm gonna make my own fixie because I found out through researching today that my bike can be a fixie after all! YAY SUMMER PROJECT!

Me*grin*: You're such a hipster.

Bf: No I'm not!

Me:....You RESEARCHED on how to D.I.Y. your perfectly good, useful 5-speed bike into a FIXIE, in a city with TONS of hills... just because you LIKE fixies.

Bf: SO?!

Me: YOU JUST WANT ONE BECAUSE YOU THINK THEY'RE COOL!

Bf: YEAH SO??? They ARE cool! BUT THAT DOESN'T MAKE ME HIPSTER!

Me: YOU PART YOUR HAIR, GROW BEARDS, WEAR THICK RIMMED GLASSES AND V-NECKS, LISTEN TO NOTHING BUT INDIE ELECTRO AND HATE EVERYTHING AS SOON AS OTHER PEOPLE LIKE IT, AND COMPLAIN ABOUT HOW YOU LIKED EVERYTHING BEFORE IT WAS MAINSTREAM, INCLUDING ALL THE OLD SCHOOL VIDEOGAMES WE LOVE. I think you're in a bit of denial, here.

BF: .........N-NOOOOOOOOOOOooooooooOOOO!! *removes glasses*

Me: Colton(roomie)!! Is Carlos a hipster?

Colton: .................Sorry, bro.

BF: *sigh*

Me: It's going to be ok.  I mean hell...  I love hipsters!! And don't worry, I think it's cute that yo-

BF: ....................I'm not a hipster.

Me: I ACCEPT YOU AND YOUR MUSTACHE FOR WHO YOU ARE-

BF: SHUT UP I'M NOT A HIPST-

Me: WE'LL GET THROUGH THIS TOGETHER!!!!!
